Hichilema Banned From Lungu Funeral By Family

Edgar Lungu's family blocks President Hichilema from the former leader's funeral. The dead president told relatives he wanted Hichilema kept away from his body. Family lawyer Makebi Zulu revealed these final wishes from South Africa. The 68-year-old former president died June 5 but his body remains abroad.

Government officials wanted a state funeral but relatives demand a private ceremony. Lungu left specific instructions about funeral arrangements before his death. Foreign Minister Mulambo Haimbe asked for unity and respect during the dispute. The family refuses to budge on their deceased relative's demands.

Officials declared seven days of national mourning starting June 7. The opposition Patriotic Front party announced separate mourning events at their headquarters. Government supporters gathered at a different location creating confusion across Zambia. Constitutional lawyers say the country needs clear funeral laws for former presidents.
