Highlanders' tiny race to snarl Bulawayo Airport Road

Highlanders Athletics Club will host its first half-marathon on Sunday morning at the Highlanders Clubhouse in Bulawayo. The 21.1-kilometer race represents an expansion from previous events that featured only 5-kilometer fun runs and 10-kilometer races. Club secretary Ngqwele Dube reported that more than 200 registered athletes were as of Saturday afternoon and said that additional participants continue to sign up.

The half-marathon begins at 6 a.m., followed by the 10-kilometer race at 6:30 a.m. and the 5-kilometer run at 7 a.m. Corporate sponsors, including CBZ, First Mutual, Zimparks, NSSA, and Nyaradzo, registered teams for the event. Bulawayo Athletics Board chairperson Watson Madanyika praised the club for promoting athletics in the city and expressed hope that the race becomes an annual fixture.

The route follows Airport Road with different turnaround points for each distance. The event ties in with Highlanders Football Club's preparations for its 2026 centenary celebrations. Highlanders have sponsored multiple sports over the years.
