Homeless roundup in Kuching triggers outcry as Fatimah Abdullah faces critics

Authorities swept through Kuching streets during early morning hours and discovered 17 people living rough across the city. The massive operation brought together a dozen government agencies who worked through the night hunting for individuals without proper shelter. Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah revealed that crews found 14 men, two women, and one teenage girl camping out in various locations. The search teams focused their efforts on connecting these vulnerable people with support services rather than forcing them into custody. Officials stressed that their temporary housing facility operates as a voluntary safe haven where residents can leave anytime they choose.

One remarkable success story emerged from the night involving a street veteran known as Pak Mos who had survived outdoors for three decades. The man finally agreed to accept government assistance after years of refusing help from social workers. Officials believe his decision will encourage other homeless individuals to trust the support system being offered. The operation demonstrated how peer influence works within the homeless community when respected members lead by example. Teams discovered that certain individuals act as informal leaders who can persuade their friends to engage with government services.

The coordinated effort involved 134 personnel who split into four groups targeting high-risk zones throughout the metropolitan area. Each team handled specific responsibilities including document verification, health referrals, and substance abuse counseling. The agencies participating ranged from police and immigration officers to health department staff and civil defense personnel. Officials noted that homelessness numbers fluctuate constantly as people lose jobs or struggle with rent payments.
