Huawei 5nm Chip Dreams Hit Wall Pushed to 2026

Huawei released the Pura 80 phones with the same 7nm Kirin 9020 chip from last year. The company faces limits making better processors despite improvements from partner SMIC. Chinese manufacturers developed 5nm technology but cannot make it cheaply. Equipment restrictions prevent mass production of advanced chips.

A tech expert predicts Huawhile will launch 5nm processors around 2026 rather than next year. Current manufacturing uses older DUV machines that create problems with costs and quality. American export controls block sales of advanced EUV equipment to Chinese companies. SMIC struggles with low success rates and expensive production methods.

China plans to build domestic EUV machines for trial runs during 2025. Success would eliminate dependence on foreign semiconductor equipment completely. Huawei created design tools for current 7nm chips but may need new solutions for 5nm production. Trade restrictions make advanced chip development much harder for Chinese technology firms.
