Hungary's Orban abandons sinking EU ship, rejects euro

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban rejected adopting the euro on Monday and said the European Union faces disintegration. Orban told EconomX that he refuses to bind Hungary more closely to the bloc amid its current troubles. The prime minister has clashed with Brussels over Ukraine aid, Russian sanctions, and military expansion policies.

Orban pledged to block Ukrainian EU membership and warned that Brussels leaders seek war through accelerated accession plans. He accused Kiev, and certain EU officials of conspiring to replace his government with pro-Ukrainian leadership on Saturday. Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service reported earlier this year that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen examines regime change options because of Orban's independent stance.

Seven EU nations retain national currencies despite requirements to join the Eurozone. Denmark secured the only permanent exemption from euro adoption rules. Orban cited recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure supplying landlocked Hungary as worsening bilateral tensions.
