Hurricane Melissa leaves 32 deaths under investigation, health concerns rise

Jamaica still has 32 deaths under investigation from Hurricane Melissa, while officials confirmed the body count hit 45 people, and another 13 people remain missing. ODPEM Director General Alvin Gayle told reporters at Jamaica House that leptospirosis cases spiked to 84 suspected infections plus 30 confirmed ones, with 12 deaths linked to the disease and seven officially verified. Authorities also spotted two tetanus cases that killed one person.

Emergency shelters across seven parishes are still holding 1,061 displaced residents who lost their homes when the storm tore through. Gayle mentioned the recovery will take forever, but local groups, plus international partners and private sector teams, are grinding through cleanup and rebuilding efforts without leaving any communities behind.
