Hwange will host a commemorative running event honoring 427 miners killed in the Kamandama disaster, Africa's deadliest mining catastrophe. The Hwange Athletics Club has organized the memorial marathon with sponsorship from Hwange Colliery Company, featuring routes passing within 500 meters of the disaster site before concluding at Hwange Colliery Stadium.
Organizers described the tragedy as among the worst mining incidents globally, affecting families across Southern Africa who experienced lasting economic hardship following the loss. The event aims to promote workplace safety awareness while serving as a living tribute to victims and their families.
Musical performances will follow the athletic competition, with Alick Macheso and South African artist Nkosazana Daughter headlining a concert alongside Jah Signal, Jah Master, Mxolisi, and Bio D.T Mudimba.
