Hwende defends $150k MP loans, draws backlash

Kuwadzana legislator Chalton Hwende faced widespread criticism after defending a proposal to provide Members of Parliament with housing loans totaling US$150,000 each, asserting that lawmakers from both major political parties have received comparable benefits since 2000. The opposition politician claimed on Sunday, November 10, that previous parliamentarians obtained vehicles, land parcels, medical coverage and additional compensation, describing the housing loan initiative as a collective decision among all 360 legislators.

Former Cabinet Minister David Coltart disputed these assertions on Monday, stating that lawmakers elected between 2000 and 2008 received only duty-free vehicle purchases, modest salaries and basic healthcare benefits. Coltart noted his ministerial compensation began at US$100 monthly in February 2009 and reached US$3,500 by his 2013 departure, with no housing assistance provided.

Citizens and political figures condemned Hwende for justifying current proposals by referencing past practices, with lawyer Fadzayi Mahere emphasizing that parliamentary service should prioritize constituent welfare over personal comfort. The controversy continues as Zimbabwe prepares its 2026 national budget.
