Iñaki Peña faces a Barcelona contract twist as Juan García's registration hits a snag

Barcelona goalkeeper Iñaki Peña faces an uncertain future that could result in an unexpected contract extension. The club acquired Juan García from Espanyol as their primary keeper while extending Wojciech Szczęsny's deal. Marc-André ter Stegen remains sidelined following surgical procedures. Multiple teams from Spain and abroad have approached Peña seeking his services. The 26-year-old desires consistent playing opportunities elsewhere.

Financial constraints prevent Barcelona from registering their new goalkeepers before La Liga begins on August 15. This registration issue may force Peña to remain as the sole available option despite Hans Flick's preference for other players. Sport newspaper revealed Peña anticipated his potential departure since May. The goalkeeper previously attempted to negotiate an early contract termination to facilitate his exit. Barcelona management has reversed course and considers offering him a one-year extension instead of allowing his departure.
