IHG to Open First Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza Hotels in Namibia

A major international hotel company will open three properties across Namibia over the next few years. InterContinental Hotels Group announced plans to build its first hotels in the southern African nation through a partnership with Grit Real Estate Income Group. The project will add about 250 rooms to the country's hotel supply. Holiday Inn will open in Windhoek around 2027, Crowne Plaza will operate at Swakopmund, and another Holiday Inn will serve Walvis Bay. These developments mark the first time the global hospitality giant has entered the Namibian market.

The hotel investments signal growing confidence in Namibia's tourism potential among international companies. Economist Almandro Jansen from Simonis Storm calls the move a strategic milestone for the country's economic development. He believes the projects will create jobs and attract foreign investment beyond just providing rooms for visitors. The three cities chosen represent key tourism and business centers across Namibia. Windhoek serves as a regional business hub and Swakopmund and Walvis Bay draw coastal travelers.

Tourism officials hope the internationally recognized hotel brands will raise Namibia's profile among global travelers. The country seeks to diversify its economy away from mining and other primary industries. Higher-end accommodations could attract visitors who spend more money and stay longer. Construction and hotel operations will generate employment opportunities for local workers. The project represents part of broader efforts to make Namibia more competitive as an African travel destination.
