Imams demand respect, roles in governance at national conference

Bangladesh's leading Islamic party has called for religious leaders to assume greater societal influence rather than depend on charitable support. Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman told a national gathering at the China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre that mosque officials should regain their historical position as community guides.

The assembly brought together heads of major religious organizations who outlined proposals for elevating the status of prayer leaders. Participants presented seven recommendations spanning governance participation, utility subsidies for religious schools, and integration of clerics into disaster response teams and local courts.

Rahman argued that Prophet Muhammad centered all administrative functions within houses of worship, contrasting this model with contemporary secular structures. Conference speakers emphasized that Islamic law should guide state policy while protecting minority faiths, and demanded equal electricity rates for educational and worship facilities.
