India dodges Hasina extradition as Bangladesh waits

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri characterized former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's presence in India as a judicial legal process requiring engagement between the two governments on Monday. Misri told members of the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh, that his country is examining the issues, but declined further comment while speaking at the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. He rejected perceptions that India favors specific political groups and emphasized support for early elections to produce a democratically elected government in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh sent a formal extradition request through a diplomatic note in December, but Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said his government has received no positive response from New Delhi. Hasina fled to India on Aug. 5 amid student-led protests. Touhid Hossain confirmed her trial has begun in Bangladesh and will proceed regardless of her attendance, though the government may seek international assistance for extradition if necessary.
