India greets PNG at 50 as Margherita meets Marape in Port Moresby

Union Minister Pabitra Margherita met Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape during an official diplomatic encounter on Monday. The minister delivered congratulatory messages from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian citizens celebrating Papua New Guinea's golden jubilee of independence. Both governments reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening bilateral partnerships and fostering closer people-to-people connections. Margherita traveled to Port Moresby as Modi's representative for independence anniversary ceremonies. The visit builds upon momentum from the landmark Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation summit that Modi hosted jointly with Marape in May 2023.

The minister plans bilateral discussions with Papua New Guinea's political leadership during his stay. He will engage with representatives from the Indian diaspora and the business community. This diplomatic mission continues India's sustained engagement with Pacific Island nations following the successful FIPIC summit. The forum connects India with fourteen Pacific Island countries, spanning the Cook Islands through Vanuatu. These relationships represent expanding development partnerships and enhanced defense cooperation between India and the Pacific region.
