India leads global fast payments as UPI processes over Rs 24 lakh crore in June

The International Monetary Fund reports that India leads the world in fast payment systems through its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform. June transactions reached 18.39 billion, valued at Rs 24.03 lakh crore, representing a 32 percent annual growth from the previous year's figures of 13.88 billion. The system processes more than 640 million daily transactions, exceeding Visa's 639 million transaction volume. UPI controls 85 percent of domestic digital payments and accounts for half of global real-time payment processing. This remarkable achievement occurred within nine years of development.

The platform connects 491 million users and 65 million businesses across 675 banking institutions through a unified infrastructure. Rural and urban populations gain affordable access to digital financial services, advancing nationwide financial inclusion goals. Seven nations currently operate UPI systems, spanning from Asian neighbors to European markets, such as France. India promotes the adoption of UPI standards by the BRICS to facilitate international transactions with enhanced speed and security. The National Payments Corporation launched this transformative payment solution in 2016.
