India will spend 3,000 crore rupees over six years to train biomedical researchers through a fellowship program that is set to begin in 2026. The Cabinet approved Phase III of the Biomedical Research Career Programme on Wednesday with the Department of Biotechnology contributing 1,000 crore rupees and the Wellcome Trust of Britain adding 500 crore rupees. The program will award fellowships to early and mid-career scientists while supporting research teams with grants and management resources across the country.
Officials expect the initiative to train more than 2,000 students and postdoctoral fellows while increasing support for women scientists by 10 to 15 percent. The government launched the first phase in 2008 to build research capacity at international standards and expanded it in 2018. Phase III will strengthen mentorship networks and forge new partnerships to advance basic science, clinical studies and public health research. The program aims to reduce regional gaps in scientific capabilities and support projects that can lead to patents and commercial applications.
