India, Russia kick off 'Indra 2025' military drills in Rajasthan desert

India and Russia started their Indra 2025 military drills in Rajasthan's desert terrain this week. The Russian Embassy in New Delhi said about 250 Russian service members joined Indian forces for the 15-day training near Bikaner. Officials from both nations emphasized the exercises strengthen their strategic partnership without targeting any specific country.

The Indra series occurs approximately every two years with alternating host nations. Previous editions included land, air and sea components such as Avia Indra and Indra Navy operations. The April 2025 naval exercises in the Bay of Bengal featured formation maneuvers and live-fire drills against maritime and aerial targets.

Defense cooperation between Moscow and New Delhi has advanced beyond simple arms purchases. The partnership now encompasses joint development of weapons systems like the BrahMos cruise missile and licensed production of military equipment under India's domestic manufacturing initiative.
