India sends MPs to UN after 21-year absence

India will send two parliamentary delegations to New York for the 80th United Nations General Assembly as the government revives a practice suspended since 2004. BJP Member of Parliament P P Chaudhary will lead the first group of 15 legislators departing on Oct. 8, and a second delegation will travel later in the month. The move reflects India's commitment to parliamentary diplomacy at the global forum where all 193 member states participate equally.

Previous Indian leaders represented the nation at past assemblies, and the restoration of non-official delegations allows lawmakers to engage in UN sessions, interact with India's permanent mission, and contribute to international policy discussions. The delegations demonstrate India's expanding role in multilateral affairs. The General Assembly serves as the UN's primary deliberative body for debating global issues, passing resolutions, and establishing agencies to address international challenges.
