India's male jobless rate hits 5 percent lowest since April

India witnessed male unemployment rates decrease to five percent during August 2025, marking the best performance since April, according to National Statistics Office data released Monday. Urban areas saw male joblessness drop from 6.6 percent in July to 5.9 percent the following month. Rural male unemployment reached 4.5 percent in August, representing an improvement over the previous four months. The decline represents the second consecutive month of falling unemployment for people aged 15 and above. Overall joblessness fell to 5.1 percent in August from 5.6 percent recorded in June.

Female employment participation continued its upward trend for the second straight month, with the Worker Population Ratio climbing to 32 percent in August from 30.2 percent in June. Rural areas showed stronger gains, rising from 33.6 percent to 35.9 percent during this period. Urban female employment grew from 22.9 percent to 23.8 percent between June and August. The Periodic Labour Force Survey provides monthly employment indicators through the Current Weekly Status methodology. These figures represent the fifth monthly bulletin in the series that began in April 2025.
