InDrive offers a 1 percent fee for Johannesburg, Pretoria

Ride-hailing platform inDrive has introduced a reduced commission structure for operators in Johannesburg and Pretoria, charging only 1 percent of fare revenues while enabling drivers to retain 99 percent of earnings through the end of the year. The company positioned the initiative as support for operators during a period when demand typically increases, but elevated platform fees have sparked industrywide demonstrations over inadequate compensation amid rising operational expenses.

Country Representative Ashif Black indicated the measure addresses longstanding concerns about commission rates that can reach 25 percent with competing services, creating financial strain for drivers managing fuel costs and vehicle upkeep. The platform previously distinguished itself through negotiable pricing between passengers and operators.

Analysts suggest the move could pressure dominant market participants, including Uber and Bolt, to reconsider fee structures, potentially triggering broader adjustments across the sector that would benefit thousands of gig economy workers dependent on these platforms for income.
