Intel 18A Node Crushes Chip Limits With Crazy Speed

Intel announced details about its new 18A chip technology at a major tech conference. The company plans to replace its current Intel 3 process with this advanced system. Engineers will use 18A technology to build future Panther Lake computer chips and server processors. The new system brings better speed and uses less power than older methods.

The 18A process uses two main technologies called RibbonFET and PowerVia. RibbonFET replaces older FinFET technology and makes transistors work better. PowerVia moves power wires to the back of chips instead of the front. These changes help chips run faster and use space more efficiently.

Test results show impressive improvements over Intel 3 technology. Chips built with 18A run 25 percent faster at the same power level. They also use 36 percent less energy when running at the same speed. The new process packs 30 percent more transistors into the same area.

Intel expects to launch additional versions of 18A technology between 2026 and 2028. The company calls these newer versions 18A-P and 18A-PT. Other companies can use Intel's factories to build their chips using this technology.
