IOC president Coventry demands Zimbabwe back athletes for LA 2028

International Olympic Committee president Dr Kirsty Coventry conducted an official visit with Acting President General Retired Dr Constantino Chiwenga in Harare on Thursday. The meeting centered on Zimbabwe's athletic preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and expanding opportunities for local competitors. Coventry praised the nation's performance at the AUSC Region V youth games while discussing enhanced support mechanisms for Zimbabwean sprinters training in America. The officials explored strategic implementation of existing memoranda of understanding with China and other international partners. Olympic Solidarity scholarships emerged as a primary funding vehicle for athlete development through National Olympic Committees.

The Olympic Solidarity Programme channels financial resources directly to National Olympic Committees for athlete scholarships and coaching initiatives. Coventry emphasized the significance of the Youth Olympic Games coming to Africa for the first time when Senegal hosts the event in Dakar during 2026. Strategic fund utilization and deeper collaboration with local sports administrators remain essential for maximizing program impact. The IOC president stressed her commitment to ensuring African participation across all Olympic activities and initiatives.
