iPadOS 26 Goes Full Mac with Next Level Multitasking

Apple plans major changes for iPad software during Monday's WWDC event. The company wants iPadOS 26 to work more like Mac computers with better multitasking features. Mark Gurman reports Apple will completely rebuild how people use multiple apps at once. The new system might need external keyboards and trackpads to work properly. Users could see design elements borrowed from Apple's Vision Pro headset.

The Preview app will arrive on iPads for the first time after years on Mac computers. People can edit PDFs and manage documents without downloading extra apps from the store. The software looks similar to the Mac version with the same startup screen design. Apple will install Preview automatically rather than making users find it separately. iPhone users will also receive the Preview app as part of the update.

Critics debate whether iPads can replace traditional computers for serious work tasks. Apple refuses to put full Mac software on tablets because it would hurt computer sales. The iPadOS 26 changes represent the biggest software update since iOS 7 launched years ago. Developers expect the announcement to reveal more productivity improvements for tablet users. The enhanced multitasking could make iPads more useful for professional work.
