iPhone Air 2 tipped to get ultrawide camera, no real zoom

Apple intends to equip the upcoming iPhone Air 2 with a second 48-megapixel camera featuring ultrawide capabilities, addressing the spatial constraints that prevented dual sensors in the original model. The California-based manufacturer will continue relying on digital cropping technology rather than incorporating dedicated telephoto hardware, according to reports from South Korean technology publications.

The device will utilize the same computational photography approach found in its predecessor, cropping the central 12-megapixel portion of the main sensor to simulate optical magnification at one-times or two-times zoom levels without quality degradation. Physical space limitations prevent the installation of prism-based telephoto components that would require enlarging the camera module plateau, particularly since even the standard iPhone 17 lacks such advanced optics.

While digital cropping cannot match the lossless five-times magnification available on Pro-tier models with tetraprism lenses, enhanced image processing through the A20 chip's upgraded signal processor may deliver improved results when the iPhone Air 2 arrives in late 2026.
