A group of students and teachers from Portlaoise College in the Republic of Ireland are getting ready for a trip to The Gambia. They'll keep helping local schools and communities there, which the college has done since 2011.
Ellen Peacock, Oran O'Brien, Eire Delaney, Aoibheann O'Sullivan, Vaselesa Hauryk, Abbie Maher, Nina Masiewicz, Ciara McComish-Day, Damien Moore, Larysa Himicz, Orlagh Creery, Catherine Graham, Hannah Piotrowska, and Elijah Colbert are the students going. Teachers John Fitzpatrick, Shaun Murphy, Amanda Cripps, and Grainne Hyland will join them.
In The Gambia, they'll focus on making school buildings better, bringing school supplies, and spending time with Gambian students. For 14 years, they've worked with a nursery school in Brikama. They've helped the school and made the building nicer.
Last time, they paid to add electricity to the nursery school, which helped the students and 500 homes nearby. They also built new school bathrooms and a kitchen. In addition to fixing up the school, they'll visit health clinics.
They want to learn about medical care there and give the clinic workers important health supplies. The students will teach classes, have a sports day at a country high school, and donate medical items. To pay for the trip, they held a Christmas raffle and car wash.
The school and town supported these very well. The money lets the students bring much-needed supplies and help with projects that will matter for a long time. The students want to thank everyone who helped, especially DS Sports, for giving them jerseys to wear on the trip.
Principal Noel Daly has been on the trip before. He said it lets students learn about a different culture and help a community that needs it. They can learn new things, better understand world problems, and make the school look good.
