Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo Fights for Seat in Senate Showdown

Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo will defend his position before the full Senate next week. The hearing takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 8 and 9, 2025. County assembly members voted to remove him from office. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced the full chamber will handle the case after lawmakers rejected forming a special committee. The original plan called for an 11-member investigation team.

Senate Majority Whip Boni Khalwale proposed the committee motion but Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo refused to support it. This rejection forced the matter into the main Senate chamber. Sixteen out of eighteen county assembly members cast votes against the governor during their meeting last Thursday. The voting session happened despite court orders that banned the impeachment process. Governor Guyo claims he never received proper notice to answer the charges against him.

Justice Heston Nyaga from Isiolo High Court ruled the impeachment invalid and ordered it stopped. The judge found Speaker Mohamed Roba guilty of ignoring court orders and demanded his personal appearance on Monday, June 30. Assembly members may have met outside their official chamber without proper legal notice. Legal experts question whether the session followed required procedures for such important votes. Governor Guyo filed new court papers challenging the assembly actions and received additional protective orders from the court.
