Israel deports Greta Thunberg, 170 activists after Gaza flotilla

Israel announced on Monday that it deported 171 more activists, including Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg, who were detained while taking part in an aid flotilla heading for Gaza. According to the Israeli foreign ministry, the deported individuals were sent to Greece and Slovakia and included citizens from several countries, such as Greece, Italy, France, and the United States.

Photos released by the ministry showed Thunberg at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport with two others, wearing grey tracksuits typically issued in Israeli prisons. The ministry stated that 138 activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla remain in Israeli custody.

The flotilla, composed of 45 vessels, sought to break the Israeli blockade and deliver aid to Gaza, where famine has been reported after two years of conflict. Israel intercepted the flotilla in international waters, preventing boats with over 400 people from reaching Gaza. Some deported activists reported mistreatment, while Israel maintained that participants’ legal rights were respected.
