Jackie Shroff credits Ghai for his chawl-to-hero leap

Jackie Shroff openly admits he never planned on being an actor. In a resurfaced speech, the star recalled his chawl upbringing, saying filmmaker Subhash Ghai basically plucked him from obscurity to make him a hero. Shroff joked about his imperfect Hindi and different way of speaking, crediting Ghai entirely for guiding him and giving him a platform alongside established names like Anil Kapoor.

His breakthrough in the movie Hero launched a career marked by raw authenticity, but not a smooth ride. He weathered box office failures and industry shifts, adapting from leading roles to complex character parts in films like Parinda and Devdas. That street-bred intensity earned him critical respect beyond commercial success. His real victory might be how he never changed his core personality, keeping his grounded and spiritual demeanor despite fame, reinventing himself across different cinema landscapes long before it was common.
