Jackson Red Card Could Cost Chelsea Champions League

Chelsea lost at Newcastle United, putting their Champions League hopes at risk. The defeat hurts coach Enzo Maresca, who has talked about the team's progress since the summer. He points to their Europa Conference League final spot as proof that things are better. But Chelsea expects to win that tournament easily. The club wants Champions League football, not Europe's third-tier trophy.

Chelsea still holds the last Champions League spot with two games left. Only one point separates them from seventh place. They face Manchester United at home next. Their final match against Nottingham Forest could decide everything. Both teams want that valuable Champions League place.

Nicolas Jackson made things worse with his red card after 35 minutes. He hit Newcastle defender Botman with his forearm. Jackson will miss the last two crucial games. Chelsea played better with ten men after halftime. Maresca moved Palmer into a forward role against Newcastle's defenders. Their effort came to nothing when Bruno Guimaraes scored late.

The Champions League matters most to Chelsea. Missing out would make Maresca's first season look like failure. The owners might view things differently if Chelsea finishes in the top five. Chelsea showed enough fight to suggest all hope remains. That final-day trip to Forest grows more important each day.
