Jaffer hails Bavuma’s gritty 55 at Eden Gardens

Former India batsman Wasim Jaffer commended South Africa captain Temba Bavuma for his composed half-century at Eden Gardens, where the skipper stood alone in reaching 50 runs during a low-scoring contest. Bavuma's unbeaten 55 marked his seventh score above fifty in eleven Tests and proved essential as his teammates struggled on a challenging surface that prevented any other player from reaching 40 across three innings.

The Proteas leader partnered with Corbin Bosch to extend their advantage from 63 to 123 runs before India dismissed South Africa for 153, setting a chase of 124 for victory. Bavuma displayed steady technique and soft hands while batting partners attempted aggressive strokes, with Bosch hitting boundaries before falling to Jasprit Bumrah's delivery. Mohammed Siraj then removed Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj in quick succession, but Bavuma's resilience gave his bowling attack a defendable total in the opening Test.
