Jamaica's Anderson blasts Nestor Mendez for a decade of OAS failures

Jamaica's top diplomat in America said goodbye to a longtime Caribbean ally at a big meeting on Wednesday. Ambassador Antony Anderson praised Nestor Mendez as the guy wrapped up ten years running the Organization of American States. Mendez worked hard for small island countries like Jamaica and pushed for better cooperation across the Americas. The Jamaican ambassador called Mendez a bridge builder who always fought for fairness and respect. Anderson said Mendez brought calm diplomacy and infectious energy to the job.

The outgoing leader from Belize championed young people, climate protection, and digital progress during his decade of service. Mendez also worked closely with Caribbean universities and pushed for gender equality and better health programs. He made sure the OAS celebrated different cultures and honored national holidays from member countries. The diplomat helped strengthen ties between governments, universities, and regular citizens across the region. His leadership style focused on bringing people together rather than driving them apart.

Mendez first got elected to the assistant secretary general job back in 2015 and won a second term in 2020. Laura Gil from Colombia takes over as his replacement and makes history as the first woman to hold the position. The OAS brings together 35 countries from across North and South America to tackle regional problems. Anderson wrapped up his farewell speech by saying Jamaica would always respect and remember Mendez as a friend. The organization has been the main forum for Western Hemisphere politics since 1948.
