Jamie Campbell Bower channels Mr. Rogers for Vecna’s return

The Stranger Things villain took inspiration from an unexpected kids' show host. Actor Jamie Campbell Bower discussed his creative process for portraying Vecna in the show's final season, revealing he used Mister Rogers as a reference point. Bower, who plays the character, also cited the horror movie Alone and an older film called The Pied Piper of Hamelin for season five. He mentioned previously borrowing from The Shining and the American remake of Funny Games for the character's earlier appearances, noting the specific physicality of actors in those films.

Bower described Vecna as a physical form representing deep resentment, comparing the feeling to a vine choking love. He explained building the character by asking questions about Vecna's psychology, like why he would recreate his childhood home within the show's supernatural dimension. This led him to explore ideas of lost innocence and a twisted desire for safety from a traumatic past. The actor even reviewed phone videos of himself practicing a specific staircase walk for a key scene, ensuring the physical movement aligned between two character states for editing purposes. He found the eerie score from a film about Fred Rogers also influenced his performance.
