Janet Museveni seizes 100-acre Bunyoro land, Kampala hails university

Education Minister Janet Museveni grabbed the land title for a massive university project during a ceremony at State House Nakasero. Dr. Henry Wamani handed over the 100-acre property located in Buhimba Town Council within Kikuube District. Top ministry officials and taskforce committee members watched the historic transfer unfold yesterday. The donation completes a land ownership switch that will establish a public university in the Bunyoro region. President Museveni had broken ground for the institution back in March.

Government planners are mapping out the university site while designers race to finish blueprints by mid-July. Construction crews will break ground in September according to taskforce chairman Professor Samuel Kyamanywa. The academic institution should welcome students approximately one year after builders start work. Professor Grace Bantebya Kyomuhendo promised the facility will create opportunities for all Ugandans while giving Bunyoro residents special advantages. Local communities should prepare for the benefits that come with hosting a major university.

The university campaign began in August 2021 when Bunyoro lawmakers and academics pitched their proposal to President Museveni at State House Entebbe. Multiple locations competed for the campus including government facilities and private land offers from various sources. A special committee evaluated all potential sites before technical experts conducted detailed assessments. The National Council for Higher Education found that most locations fell short of the required 50-acre minimum. Buhimba emerged as the clear winner after beating out Bulera and other contenders.
