JETP Impact - South Africa and Senegal Lead Africa's Energy Transition

Some countries are getting money to help them stop using fossil fuels. This money is called a Just Energy Transition Partnership, or JETP. South Africa and Senegal are the first African countries to get this kind of help.

South Africa uses a lot of coal for power. It wants to use cleaner energy, but it also needs to make sure it has enough electricity for everyone. Sometimes, the power goes out because the coal plants are old and break down. South Africa may need to keep using coal for a while longer to keep the lights on.

Senegal uses oil for power, not coal. The money from the JETP will help Senegal use more wind, solar, and water power. By 2030, it wants to get 40% of its electricity from these cleaner sources.

The JETP money is a good start, but South Africa and Senegal will need even more money to fully switch to clean energy. They hope to get this extra money from companies and other sources.

It's important to watch how things go in South Africa and Senegal. Other African countries can learn from them. Changing from fossil fuels to clean energy is hard, but it's possible with help and planning.
