Joburg Kunene seeks a task team for Moekeletsi

Johannesburg Transport MMC Kenny Kunene has called for a specialized police task team to address the frequent unsolved murders within the taxi industry. He made this appeal during the funeral of Molefe Victor Moekeletsi, a prominent taxi association chairperson who was ambushed and killed on October 30. Kunene contrasted the lack of arrests in such cases with the swift action typically taken when politicians are targeted.

Moekeletsi, who led the Alexandra, Randburg, Midrand, and Sandton Taxi Association, was shot dead in Marlboro. The attack also resulted in the death of his bodyguard and injured two others. Police are investigating the incident as a double murder, though no suspects have been apprehended. The killing represents one of approximately 40 taxi-related violent incidents recorded in Gauteng this year.

The proposed task team would mirror a similar unit in KwaZulu-Natal that investigates political assassinations. Industry leaders support the initiative, emphasizing that taxi violence disrupts a vital part of the national transport system and economy.
