Johannesburg faces backlash over stalled projects

Opposition politicians in Johannesburg are criticizing the city for prioritizing cosmetic upgrades for the G20 Summit over completing stalled community projects. Democratic Alliance councillor Beverley Jacobs highlighted that developments like the Bertram Multi-Purpose Centre and the Hikensile Clinic remain unfinished despite millions in public expenditure. The Bertram project alone has consumed over 130 million rand, with an additional 45 thousand rand spent daily on site security during its suspension.

The Democratic Alliance plans to picket the Premier’s office, demanding full audits and a commitment to finish these essential services. The party argues that the city diverted four billion rand from vital capital projects to prevent service disruptions during the international event. This has intensified scrutiny of the municipality's financial management and its impact on local communities awaiting basic infrastructure.
