Judiciary May Close Courts as Unpaid Rent Crisis Deepens

Pius Bigirimana takes care of all the courts in Uganda. He told some important people at Parliament he might ask landlords to close court buildings. This would happen because the money people did not pay rent for these buildings.

Bigirimana attended a meeting with people who check how money is spent. He said he had to use money meant for other court work to pay for places where judges work. Last year, he paid 790 million shillings for late rent, even though this money was not part of his plan.

"I can tell judges they must leave these offices. I will not break the law. I will close these offices instead. This will cause many problems," Bigirimana said to the important people. He added, "If you say I break rules, I will shut down these places."

Some of the important people did not like how Bigirimana talked. They thought he used bad words. But Sarah Opendi from Tororo stood up for him. She asked everyone to let Bigirimana explain the hard parts of his job.

"I see nothing wrong with this man speaking his mind. If he wants to go to prison because he helps courts work, he can say what he thinks," Opendi said.
