A court in Dhaka just approved another five days of police custody for a suspect linked to a political assassination. The suspect is Md Kabir, who police say worked with the main shooter, Faisal Karim Masud. They are the prime accused in the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi. Hadi was a spokesperson for a group called Inqilab Moncho and a prospective candidate from the Dhaka 8 constituency. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah gave the order after investigators asked for a full week. This comes right after Kabir finished a previous seven-day remand period granted by the court.
The shooting itself happened earlier in the month on Box Culvert Road, within the Paltan Model Police Station area. Officials say Hadi was riding in a battery-powered auto rickshaw when two men on a motorcycle pulled up and opened fire. He got badly hurt and went to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital first. After an operation, he moved to Evercare Hospital and was flown to Singapore for more care, where he ultimately died.
Police reviewed security camera footage from near the attack. They identified the two men on the motorcycle as Faisal Karim Masud, who they say pulled the trigger, and Alamgir Sheikh, who was allegedly driving. A case about the murder was officially filed by Javed, the member secretary of Inqilab Moncho. The investigating officer for the case is DB Police Inspector Faisal Ahmed.
