Kakao eyes Asia-wide K-pop chart with China and Japan

Kakao is teaming up with streaming giants in China and Japan to launch a definitive K-pop chart. The South Korean firm partnered with Tencent Music and Line Music to integrate listening data across their massive platforms. This new ranking will debut on Kakao's Melon service, calculating artist popularity from combined user engagement metrics across all three regions.

The chart aims to establish a reliable global standard for measuring K-pop influence. Tencent operates China's largest music streaming apps, while Line Music dominates the Japanese market. Kakao's co-CEO called the collaboration meaningful for the ongoing K-pop boom. The initiative seeks to add new value for the industry, artists, and fans alike.

Line Music's CEO noted high Japanese demand for K-pop, making local activity reflected on a global chart significant. This move follows other recent integrations of Asian streaming data into international chart systems. Kakao Entertainment also holds a major stake in a prominent K-pop agency, solidifying its industry role. The company previously faced legal scrutiny related to its aggressive expansion within the entertainment sector.f
