Kanu Family Calls for Sanctions on Disobedient Judges

Nnamdi Kanu's relatives want punishment for Federal High Court Chief Judge John Tsoho and Justice Binta Nyako because they ignored legal rulings. The IPOB leader's family believes these judges damaged the court system's reputation by refusing to follow valid decisions. Prince Emmanuel Kanu signed the statement representing his family members. They praised Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun for stepping in to make sure someone new handles the case that has dragged on for ten years.

The family expressed relief about the Chief Justice taking action. They found it frustrating that public pressure and the top judge had to get involved before Nyako would step aside as she previously agreed to do. They questioned why both judges faced no consequences for harming public trust in the courts. They wondered how strange it was that a judge openly refused to follow court directions.

The main issue involves Nigeria trying to make self-determination illegal, even though laws protect this right. The government keeps Kanu locked up at the Department of State Services despite several courts clearing him of treason charges. Officials instead accused him of terrorism. Last September, Kanu asked Justice Nyako to remove herself from his trial because he lost faith in her fairness.

After this request, Nyako stepped down and sent the case to Justice Tsoho, but he refused it and told her to continue handling it. Tsoho later postponed the case indefinitely back in December. Because of pressure from his legal team, authorities finally assigned a different judge to oversee Kanu's trial. The changes came after years of controversial legal battles surrounding the detained IPOB leader.
