Kapil Dev gets roasted for Pakistan handshake gaffe

Former cricket captain Kapil Dev drew widespread condemnation after suggesting India should prioritize sportsmanship over political tensions with Pakistan during the Asia Cup trophy controversy. The 1983 World Cup winner told media outlets that refusing handshakes with Pakistani officials was acceptable but urged the team to move forward from such disputes. Retired military officers criticized his remarks as disconnected from security realities facing soldiers and civilians killed by cross-border terrorism.

Political analyst Tehseen Poonawala reminded Kapil that Pakistani militants would not spare him based on his Hindu name while venture capitalist Jai Anant Dehadrai dismissed the former athlete as irrelevant. Social media users questioned whether the current Professional Golf Tour of India president should retain brand ambassadorships after comments many considered disrespectful to national security concerns. Public pressure mounted for an apology as critics accused him of undermining Indian dignity through what they termed sympathetic views toward a hostile neighbor.
