Zimbabwe's young karate fighters brought home eight shiny medals from the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games. The team traveled to Windhoek, Namibia and made their country proud with impressive performances. Head coach Winston Nyanhete watched his eight athletes compete over the weekend before returning Sunday night. The squad grabbed two silver medals and six bronze medals during their time at the competition. Coach Nyanhete felt happy about how his fighters performed against tough opponents from across the region.
Bongeka Mguni and Lovemore Mutune both earned silver medals for their excellent fighting skills. Mguni won her silver medal competing against girls over 66kg. Mutune took his silver medal fighting boys under 68kg and also grabbed a bronze medal later. The coach mentioned that Maxine Kulupi missed her chance at a final match because she broke her nose during her semi-final fight. Trinity Kotsi, Anita Machuma, and Geraldine Muusha all brought home bronze medals for their strong performances.
The coach believes this competition gave his athletes great experience before they move up to senior level fighting. These same fighters will soon compete against adult karatekas at higher level tournaments. Nyanhete wants some of his team members to fight at the Africa Karate Championships happening at the end of July. The team also has a National Championship coming up at Kwekwe on July 26th. Next year the games will take place again across the border at Mozambique.
