Kariba Dam Pumps 500MW Winter Power Surge

Kariba South Hydropower Station will boost electricity production to 500 megawatts this winter. The Zambezi River Authority approved more water for Zimbabwe's power company, ZESA, and Zambia's ZESCO. Lake Kariba water levels jumped from less than 7 percent to more than 16 percent after recent rains. The station currently makes 400 megawatts each day. Energy Minister July Moyo said the extra power will help winter crop farmers.

Zimbabwe received water rights to produce 485 megawatts from the river authority. The power station can produce 500 megawatts when fewer people use electricity. Moyo wants farmers to avoid power cuts during the winter planting season. He told farmers to install prepaid electricity meters for reliable power. Banks that provide seeds and fertilizer can help farmers buy these meters.

The government plans to harvest large amounts of crops this winter season. Officials expect 600,000 tonnes of wheat from winter planting programs. Farmers should also produce 39,000 tonnes of barley and 236,000 tonnes of potatoes. The extra electricity from Kariba Dam will support irrigation systems across Zimbabwe. Power increases come at the right time for agricultural production.
