Karonga Airport resumes flights to help local economy

According to Baba Steven Malondera, commercial flights will start running at Karonga International Airport in just three weeks. The Deputy Transport Minister expects this change to bring money into the area. He visited the airport Saturday to check on repairs. Once planes begin landing again, local residents should see more job openings.

Malondera, who serves as the Malawi Congress Party's youth director, believes air travel helps everyone. When fewer cars and trucks use roads, they last longer. Many travelers prefer flying when given the choice. The runway stretches 6.5 kilometers, making it ready for various aircraft types.

Air Malawi safety expert Frank Madzi noticed several improvements during his visit. Workers fixed potholes throughout the landing area. They widened shoulders along both sides of the runway. Surface quality improved dramatically after recent upgrades to the pavement.

Lotus Resources Limited partnered with the Malawi Government to repair the facility. Their mining manager, Philip Schoeman, promised his company would use the airport regularly. Lotus plans to keep paying for maintenance at the airfield. This teamwork between business and government made the reopening possible for everyone in the region.
