Kavango West clinics in dark, vaccines at risk

Blackouts are forcing Namibian nurses to use phone flashlights for medical exams. Health facilities in the Musese constituency of Kavango West, specifically Gcaruhwa Clinic and Rupara Health Centre, face crippling electricity outages that disrupt vaccine storage, emergency care, and equipment use. Gcaruhwa nurse Christophin Decelestino said the small clinic already struggles with transport and poor roads, risking maternity cases, while Rupara acting supervisor Chrispinus Kanyengo noted their backup generator is broken, scattering operations whenever power fails.

A community member, Maria Mukendwa, described a nighttime visit to Gcaruhwa Clinic, where a nurse used a phone torch to examine her sick child, raising fears about missed diagnoses and compromised vaccines from non-functional fridges. Kavango West health program officer Boniface Hamutenya acknowledged the widespread power issue across regional health facilities.

Regional health director Fransiska Hamutenya outlined a resource plan addressing these systemic failures. Immediate repairs are underway for Rupara's backup power, with a burnt alternator fix ordered. The region budgeted for new industrial generators next financial year and is considering household generators as temporary backups.

The plan also tackles transportation, stating Rupara's ambulance is under repair after an accident, with a replacement expected soon. Three new ambulances were distributed, with one assigned to the district covering Rupara to handle emergencies. Hamutenya admitted broader infrastructure gaps like staff housing shortages, stating coordination continues with national management in Windhoek for long-term planning.

Healthcare workers emphasized their dependency on modern electrical equipment, with frequent trips causing major disruptions. The situation underscores the severe rural healthcare delivery challenges in Namibia, where unreliable power and transport directly threaten patient safety despite outlined bureaucratic solutions.
