Kawempe North Chaos as Rebels Break Party Lines

The Electoral Commission started taking names of people who want to be the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North today. The job is open because the old MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya, died.

Two people from the big political parties, NUP and NRM, didn't listen to their parties. They signed up to run on their own. Luwemba Lusswa Muhammed from NUP and Hanifa Karadi Murerwa from NRM did this even though their parties said they would punish them.

The NUP picked a lawyer named Erias Nalukoola Luyimbazi to run for them. He won a contest against other people who wanted the job. The NRM chose Faridah Nambi. She is the daughter of an important NRM leader named Hajj Moses Kigongo.

Luwemba thought he should run for NUP because he helped Ssegirinya a lot. But the party said no. Luwemba said he would still run but not leave NUP.

Karadi said the way NRM picked Nambi was not fair. She thinks Nambi only won because her dad is important. Karadi said she has been a good NRM member for a long time. She decided to run on her own because she felt the party was unfair.

Nambi said Karadi was wrong. She said if anyone disagrees with how things happened, a special group will listen to them. She said NRM gives people many chances.

The election to pick the new Kawempe North MP will happen on March 13, 2025.
