Kenya cheers 24 public servants for 900 years service

Kenya celebrated 24 retired public servants at a special Easter-themed lunch event. These workers gave almost 900 years combined service to their country, with careers lasting between 13 and 42 years. They served through major national events like the 1988 Mlolongo elections, changes to the Constitution, and the rise of innovations such as M-PESA.

Felix Koskei, Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service, called them "pillars of governance" and praised their ability to adapt through challenges, including health crises and terrorism threats. He encouraged them to see retirement as a time to become community mentors rather than the end of their usefulness. The ceremony also thanked family members who supported these public servants throughout their careers.

This recognition event represents a modern approach to honoring retirees, moving away from old practices of giving farming tools as retirement gifts. The government views this celebration as part of its efforts to improve public service through honoring excellence and keeping institutional knowledge alive. Several other government officials attended the event at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.
