Kenya opens 7-day window to fix school placements

The education ministry is opening a one-week review period for high school placements after parents and students complained about the initial results. Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok announced the move, acknowledging dissatisfaction with the Grade 10 slot allocations under the new Competency-Based Education system. This follows the release of the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment results for over 1.1 million candidates.

Bitok blamed the issues on high demand for popular schools, communication breakdowns, and mismatches between chosen career tracks and test scores. Students can request a review through their old junior schools or local ministry offices. The process will use an automated system to match updated preferences with performance data and open spots. Officials will also fix any placement errors caused by incorrect gender listings during this window.

This group is the first to move from junior to senior school under the full CBE structure, which the PS called a historic but anxiety-inducing transition. He asked for constructive engagement as the system is refined. Placements were determined by a computer system weighing student choices, KJSEA scores, and other factors to promote fairness. The CBE model itself uses a combined score: 20% from Grade 6 primary assessments, 20% from continuous junior school grades, and 60% from the final Grade 9 KJSEA exam. Students pick from three senior school pathways—STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts and Sports—and had previously selected a dozen preferred schools based on their interests and the institutions' capacities.
