Kenya opens Dubai office to stop exporters from being stiffed

Kenyan exporters are getting absolutely fleeced in Dubai, so the commerce chamber finally opened a local office. The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry established a Dubai base to tackle massive financial losses. President Erick Rutto stated the office will provide due diligence and payment protection for exporters. Substantial volumes of goods and income are lost weekly to fraudulent or non-compliant buyers.

Fresh produce exporters lose about three containers each week without compensation. Livestock sector losses are even more staggering, with roughly a quarter of shipments going unpaid annually. Kenyan goat meat sells for less than its Ethiopian competitors due to disease control and certification gaps. These losses represent billions of shillings and countless livelihoods.

The chamber identified key problems enabling these losses. Inadequate buyer checks, weak payment systems, and information asymmetry leave exporters exposed. Many deals operate on open credit without insurance. Pursuing legal action across borders is prohibitively expensive and complex. Unscrupulous importers often receive goods, then disappear or refuse payment with false quality claims.

The new office aims to physically verify buyer premises and run background checks. It will maintain a blacklist of defaulting importers and liaise with local commercial registries. The chamber will promote secure payment methods like escrow arrangements. On-ground analysts will provide real-time market intelligence to prevent undervaluation and compliance mismatches.

Officials urge exporters to utilize the service as trade volumes grow. The move signals a shift from ceremonial outreach to practical protection of Kenyan commercial interests abroad. A few bad actors should not undermine the entire bilateral trade relationship, Rutto emphasized. The office represents a more assertive posture in defending farmers and businesses.
