Kenya, UK Sign £1.5bn Strategic Partnership for Trade, Climate and Technology

Kenya will receive up to 1.5 billion pounds from Britain through a fresh partnership deal that President William Ruto and Prime Minister Keir Starmer plan to sign. The Kenya-UK Strategic Partnership 2025-2030 targets trade, climate action, technology growth and security cooperation. State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed announced the agreement aims to create jobs and boost Kenya's international position. The partnership focuses on climate projects, digital innovation and regional stability efforts. Officials expect the deal to unlock major investments across multiple sectors.

Ruto departs Kenya on Sunday for official visits to Britain and Spain. The president will meet Starmer in London to formalize the new partnership agreement. Trade officials want to double commerce between both nations by 2030. The partnership will help Kenyans develop digital skills and strengthen cooperation on terrorism and cyber threats. Both countries plan to work together on climate action initiatives.

The agreement covers four main areas that will guide future cooperation. Trade and green growth projects will speed up completion of the Nairobi Railway City development. Climate cooperation will help unlock green financing from public and private sources. Science and technology efforts will expand Kenya's innovation system and support startups. The partnership also addresses artificial intelligence and emerging technology collaboration.

Lloyd's of London will announce plans to establish a regional office in Nairobi during Ruto's visit. The insurance market will operate under the Nairobi International Financial Centre framework. This move positions Kenya's capital as a financial center for Sub-Saharan Africa. Ruto will deliver a speech at the Africa Debate hosted by Invest Africa. The event promotes Kenya's economic transformation and attracts strategic investment.

Ruto begins his trip in Seville, Spain, attending the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development. Global leaders will create new frameworks for development financing to address poverty, inequality and climate change. The president will advocate for stronger international cooperation and co-chair a session. Ruto plans bilateral meetings with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and King Felipe VI focusing on clean energy and youth programs.
