Kenyan church celebrates ‘Black Messiah’ on Christmas

A Kenyan church celebrated Christmas by honoring a figure they call the Black Messiah. Thousands of Legion Maria members gathered in Nzoia in western Kenya for a ceremony on December twenty fifth, dressed in white robes and holding candles. The event centered on the birth of Baba Simeo Melkio Ondeto, whom followers believe is a divine savior for African people, distinct from the Jesus of mainstream Christianity.

The Legion Maria church, an African Independent Church founded in the nineteen sixties, blends Catholic rituals with traditional beliefs. Their theology positions Ondeto as the Black Messiah and Mama Maria as a key spiritual mother, offering a faith rooted in local cultural identity. This celebration reflects a broader movement across the continent where Christianity has been adapted to incorporate indigenous practices and address community-specific needs.

For attendees, many from impoverished backgrounds, the gathering provides a profound sense of belonging and spiritual empowerment. The observance underscores how religious traditions can evolve to offer hope and resilience within particular historical and social contexts, challenging standard narratives of the holiday season.
